Our Beliefs

These are our core beliefs as a church that make up our belief statement. We believe these essential doctrines are fundamental to our identity as God’s people.

ABOUT GOD

There is only one God (1), who exists eternally in three persons (2); Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in perfect unity. He is the almighty and loving Creator (3), Saviour and Judge who sustains and governs all things according to his sovereign will for his own glory (4).

1. Deut 6:4, 2. Matt 28:19, 3. Gen 1:1, 4. Rom 11:36

ABOUT HUMANITY

All people, men and women, are created in God’s image (5) and are called to love and serve God with all their beings (6). However, since sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, all people are guilty of rebellion against God and human nature is thoroughly corrupted by sin. This makes everyone subject to God’s righteous anger and condemnation.

5. Gen 1:27, 6. Deut 6:5, 7. Rom 5:12-19

ABOUT THE BIBLE

The Bible, as originally given, is the God-breathed, infallible and inerrant word of God. This precious, life-giving word is sufficient for all knowledge of God and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct (8). It consists of sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments.

8. 2 Tim 3:16-17

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST

God demonstrated his love toward us by sending his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (9), who is both God and man (10). He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin (11), and lived a sinless life in obedience to the Father. He died on a cross, rose from the dead (12), and is in his resurrected body ascended into heaven (13) where he is exalted as ruler over all time.

9. Jn 3:16, 10. Phil 2:6-8, 11. Lk 1:34-35, 12. Acts 17:31, 13. Acts 1:9-11

ABOUT SALVATION

Salvation is entirely the gracious gift of God and cannot be earned or deserved (14). It is accomplished through the atoning death, once and for all time (15), of our representative and substitute, Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and sinners (16). By Christ’s death God’s anger is turned aside (17), we are redeemed from sin and death, and we are declared righteous in God’s sight. Salvation is offered in the gospel and received when the Holy Spirit enters the believer enabling repentance and faith (18).

14. Eph 2:8, 15. Heb 10:10, 16. 1 Tim 2:5, 17. 1 Jn 2:2, 18. Titus 3:5

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Father and the Son have sent the Holy Spirit from heaven (19). He enables people to turn to God, the Father and to trust in Jesus Christ, the Lord. He makes the death of Christ effective to individual sinners, imparting spiritual life. God’s Spirit dwells in all those he has regenerated, producing in them likeness to Christ in attitudes, actions and speech (20).

19. Jn 15:26, 20. Rom 8:1-17

ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF GOD

The Lord Jesus Christ builds up the Church, his people, through the proclamation and teaching of his word. All who have been saved through the work of Christ are members of his Church and united with one another. God has equipped his people with gifts to be used for mutual edification in the Church and for the proclamation of the gospel to the world (21).

21. 1 Cor. 12:12-26

ABOUT ORDINANCES

We believe that baptism is an ordinance of the Lord by which those who have repented and come to faith (22) express their union with Christ in His death and resurrection (23), by being immersed in water (24) in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (25). We believe that the Lord’s Supper is an ordinance of the Lord in which gathered believers eat bread, signifying Christ’s body given for His people, and drink the cup of the Lord, signifying the New Covenant in Christ’s blood. We do this in remembrance of the Lord, and thus proclaim His death until He comes (26).

22. Col 2:12, 23. Rom 6:3-4, 24. Acts 8:36-39, 25. Matt 28:19, 26. 1 Cor 11:23-26

ABOUT THE FUTURE

The Lord Jesus Christ will return from heaven to judge all mankind (27). He will welcome his people into a life of eternal joy in fellowship with God, and he will execute God’s condemnation on all who have not received him (28). On that day all sin, suffering and death will be completely destroyed (29) and God will be glorified forever.

27. 2 Tim 4:1, 28. Rom 2:5-16, 29. Rev 21:4

Our Mission

Douglas Park Evangelical Church is an organisation seeking to fulfil a twofold mission, to –

(1) present Christ to everyone, and

(2) present every believer mature in Christ.

Presenting Christ to everyone is God’s will and it means that as a church we should be engaged in evangelism.

Presenting every believer mature in Christ means to increasingly invest at church in creating a disciple-making culture. We’re all on a journey of maturing in Christ and it’s God’s will that we foster this as a church, both corporately and individually.

We invite you to contact us if your are interested in finding out more about us, if you need help visiting our church, or would like to ask us any questions about joining our fellowship.
